Break In

from $40.00

Breaking in a new glove can be challenging due to the stiffness of new leather. Our Break In service provides a boost to this process.

It is a partial break in service, where we aim to get the glove approximately 70-80% broken in for you to practice. The player should complete the break in process playing catch, so the glove molds to his/her hand properly.

Leather stiffness varies among gloves. Some are much more difficult to break in. We will inspect your glove or mitt to determine how much effort would be required to get it 70-80% broken in.

We will inspect your glove or mitt and let you know how much work will be required and the price. There are three price points: $40, $60, and $75. Upon inspection we will take into account if the glove is already partially broken in. For example, we may only charge $20-$40 to help you finish breaking in a glove or mitt you have already partially broken in.

During this service, conditioner (if needed) is applied to your entire glove to soften the leather. We use a wood mallet and weighted balls to shape a pocket and make the glove easier to bend and close.

We also offer glove or mitt modifications (as needed) to improve performance and help with the break in, such as thinning a thick heel pad and removing excess pocket grease adhesive.

While complete break in should be done by the player through regular catch over weeks to months, our service helps speed up the process.

No water, steam or heat are used, ensuring the leather remains in its best condition.

After Break In, we buff the leather to enhance its luster, providing you with a glove that looks great and is ready for play.

Please leave a note during check-out if there are details you want us to be aware of.

Typical Questions We Ask Before Break In:

  • What is the glove/mitt model?

  • How old is the player?

  • What is the player’s general hand size, relative to others his/her age? It could help to meet and talk with the player, but not necessary.

  • How does the player hold the glove? 2 fingers in the pinky stall, 1 in the pinky stall and 2 in the middle stall, or traditional 1 finger in each stall?

Our Break In Styles:

  • For fielder gloves we do a double-hinge break in which provides for a quick ball transfer, a bigger pocket, and offers a more secure fielding of the ball. Outfielder gloves will generally close thumb to pinky, and Infielder gloves will generally close thumb to ring finger.

  • For catcher’s mitts we do a double-hinge box break in. Please let us know if you would rather have a flat break in.

  • The design of a first baseman mitt determines whether we break it in with a single breakpoint, or double.
